NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Day two at the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships was a good one for Mississippi State men's tennis as both Giovanni Oradini and Gregor Ramskogler notched three-set wins over their ranked foes to move on their respective draws.
The senior Oradini closed the day for State by posting one of the highest-ranked victories of his Bulldog career to move into the main draw's Round of 16. Ranked 24th nationally, the MSU veteran faced the No. 7 seed and 14th-ranked Matias Soto of Baylor.
After Soto took a close first set in a tiebreaker, he established an early 2-0 lead in the second. But Oradini would not be fazed. As the match progressed, the Bulldog would prove the more experienced player as the Bear junior was unable to keep his level of play high enough, with Oradini taking the final three games of the second set to force a deciding third. Once there, Oradini would produce a five-game win streak to claim the third and the match 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-1.
Oradini's Round of 16 matchup on Friday will come against St. Mary's College's Damon Kesaris.
In singles consolation action Thursday morning, the sophomore Ramskogler notched an equally impressive victory, posting the first ranked win of his young MSU career.
Ramskogler started out the match against North Carolina's 50th-ranked Joshua Peck firing on all cylinders as the Bulldog cruised comfortably to take the first set 6-2. In the second, the Tar Heel junior evened things up with a 7-5 win and rode that momentum to a commanding 5-0 lead in the third. However, Ramskogler dug deep and battled back to even things at 5-5, with the players finally going to a third-set tiebreaker to decide the match. Down 2-0 in the breaker, Ramskogler fought back again, dropping only one more point the rest of the way to take the match 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3).
Ramskogler will now battle Dartmouth's 41st-ranked Charlie Broom Friday in the Round of 16 in consolation play.
