NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Giovanni Oradini could not ask for a much better start to the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, as the Rovereto, Italy, senior notched a comfortable first round win to open play in the event's 64-player singles field Wednesday.
Oradini opened against Indiana's Bennett Crane. The 24th-ranked Bulldog started off slow as he was broken and trailed 3-2 to start the match but battled back to break and go up 4-3. The rest of the set was his, however, holding at love twice in a row and then broke Crane to claim the first 7-5. Crane went up 2-1 early in the second, but that game would be his last. The veteran Bulldog showed his determination, claiming the next five games to take the set and the match 7-5, 6-2.
Oradini will now prepare for his second-round match against Baylor's seventh-seeded and 14th-ranked Matias Soto. The two will battle for a spot in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
Also representing the Maroon and White in California is sophomore Gregor Ramskogler, as he took court Wednesday in his first-ever main draw match in a national collegiate event. The Bulldog – who had won the ITA Southern Regional singles crown to advance to Fall Nationals - had a tough opening matchup, falling in a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Oklahoma State's 12th-seeded and 19th-ranked Matej Vocel.
Ramskogler will look to rebound in the tournament's singles consolation draw on Thursday, meeting UNC's 50th-ranked Joshua Peck in the first round of consolation play.
