The Rebels are the Bulldogs' most common foe, and this series is among the longest in NCAA Division I history. The two schools started playing for the trophy in 1927. The Bulldogs have won five out of the last seven against the Rebels at Scott Field; however, Ole Miss has taken the last two.
State looks to extend its school-record streak of nine consecutive bowl appearances, joining Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M as the only SEC schools to go to a bowl game every season this decade.
Thursday's game also marks Senior Day for 26 seniors. MSU will recognize its seniors prior to kickoff. The group includes: DE Fletcher Adams, DT Lee Autry, OL Tommy Champion, S Brian Cole II, RB Malik Dear, RB Nick Gibson, TE Farrod Green, WR Stephen Guidry, DT Kendell Jones, LB Sh'mar Kilby-Lane, S Jaquarius Landrews, LB Leo Lewis, RB Alec Murphy, OL Tyre Phillips, WR Tristan Pisacane, DE Chauncey Rivers, H/P Kody Schexnayder, CB Maurice Smitherman, QB Tommy Stevens, OL Michael Story, LS Nathan Swanson, WR Deddrick Thomas, LB Tim Washington, OL Evans Wilkerson, OL Darryl Williams, WR Isaiah Zuber.
Ole Miss holds a 64-44-6 advantage in the series dating back to 1901. MSU owns a 10-14-1 record on Thanksgiving against the Rebels but has won two of the last three played on the holiday.
Thursday's game marks the 20th anniversary of "The Kick and the Pick" in 1999 when the Bulldogs earned a dramatic 23-20 victory over Ole Miss on Thanksgiving in Starkville. Trailing 20-6, MSU tied the game thanks to a fourth-quarter rally. With the score at 20-20 and 20 seconds remaining, instead of playing for overtime, the Rebels decided to run a play, deep in their own territory. Ole Miss QB Romero Miller tossed a deep pass, which was deflected by the hands and then the foot of MSU CB Robert Bean before being intercepted by DB Eugene Clinton and returned deep into the Rebels' territory. On the next play, with 8 seconds left, Bulldog kicker Scott Westerfield kicked a 44-yard game-winning field goal.
