Volleyball to Host Georgia on Senior Day
November 16, 2019 | Volleyball
By Austin Coats, Graduate Assistant/Communications
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State volleyball will close out a three-match homestand at the Newell-Grissom Building Sunday (Nov. 17) as they face off against Georgia at 1 p.m. CT.
Prior to its penultimate home match of the 2019 season, MSU volleyball (13-13, 2-12 SEC) will celebrate senior day. Four student-athletes - Seniors Amarrah Cooks and Alleah Stamatis and juniors Kanani Price and Gabby Zgunda - will be honored as they conclude their careers in Maroon and White at the end of this season.
"We are so excited to celebrate our four girls as we honor them on senior day," MSU volleyball coach Julie Darty said. "Emotions will be high, and I am excited for the team to get out on the court and compete. It's that time of year where we all know it's coming to an end soon, so I am hoping we can really play well down this final stretch of our season. We have seen a ton of growth and change this year and I just am so proud of this team.
Mississippi State and Georgia (18-7, 10-4 SEC) will play the lone matchup between the two teams this season. In the series, Georgia is hanging on to a three-match win streak stretching back to 2016. The contest can be seen live digitally via SEC Network+.
"We have had a good, solid week of practice. Georgia is a very talented team and they're playing extremely well. We know we are going to have to focus on our side of the net and play the way we want to play. If we can continue to focus on our first contact and be who we want to be, I think we will be proud of the product."
Coming into the match, MSU freshmen Callie Minshew and Makenzie Jordan are tied atop the SEC freshman digs leaderboard with 227 apiece. The help fuel a defense that is ranked third in the league with 14.63 digs per set.
Promotions
In honor of the "sweet" senior day celebration, Mississippi State athletic marketing will be giving away sweets prior to the match. Every Sunday at The Griss is Sundae Funday, as a free ice cream sundae bar is available to fans.
