TULSA, Okla. - Mississippi State's Giovanni Oradini rallied from a set down Wednesday to open the 2019 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships with a victory to move into Thursday's second round.
After a three-hour-plus rain delay and having to move inside, the 24th-ranked Oradini was finally able to take the court at 1:45 p.m. CT against TCU's 86th-ranked Luc Fomba. After the two players exchanged holds of serve, that would be all Oradini could muster in the first frame as Fomba rolled to take the set 6-1. Starting the second set, Oradini comfortably held serve to start. After the hold, he broke Fomba for a 2-1 lead and buckled down to take the set 6-3 to force a deciding third frame.
The two both served strong in the first half of the third, each holding for the first six games to 3-3. But that ended in the next game, when the MSU senior capitalized on unforced errors from Fomba to go up 4-3. After that, the match was on Oradini's racquet, and he held serve the rest of the way, blasting a forehand into the deuce court on the final point to take the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Oradini now advances to meet UCF's 29th-ranked Gabriel Decamps in Thursday's second round at a time to be determined. Decamps upended 15th-ranked Bar Botzer of Wake Forest in his opener on Wednesday.
