TULSA, Okla. - Mississippi State's Giovanni Oradini rallied once again from a set down Thursday to continue his run at the 2019 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships with a victory to move into Friday's Round of 16. The tournament is being held at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
To start play early Thursday, the 24th-ranked Oradini began his second round match outdoors at 9 a.m. CT against UCF's 29th-ranked Gabriel Decamps. The two turned in a serving battle as both players held for the first five games to 3-2. But Decamps rolled to a 5-2 lead before rain hit the Tulsa area for the second day in a row. The match would be delayed and moved indoors to conclude over two hours later. Upon resumption, Decamps served out the set 6-2.
The second set was a different story entirely as Oradini came out firing on all cylinders and dominated Decamps 6-0. Going into the final set, both players showed determination to come out on top, with each firing all their best shots. Ultimately, Oradini would prove the better by claiming the set and the match 2-6 6-0, 6-4.
Oradini now advances to meet San Diego's 32nd-ranked Gui Osoria in Friday's Round of 16 at a time to be determined. Osoria knocked off the tournament's top seed - No. 2 nationally ranked Christian Sigsgaard of Texas – 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in his second-round match Thursday.
The Bulldog senior becomes just the eighth MSU player ever to reach the singles Round of 16 at the prestigious ITA All-Americans. His former teammate Nuno Borges reached the finals of the event last fall as did Matthieu Ballay in 1996. Daniel Courcol and Thomas Dupre claimed the title for State in 1992 and 1996, respectively.
