STARKVILLE – The second contest of a three-match SEC road trip continues for Mississippi State volleyball Wednesday (Oct. 9) as the Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama at Foster Auditorium.
Mississippi State (11-5, 0-4 SEC) eyes its first SEC win of the 2019 campaign after some competitive matches to start conference play.
"Another road match is another opportunity for us to take a step in the right direction," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "This team is working hard in the gym and I'm excited for the moment where we can turn the corner, feel like we are playing our best volleyball and be excited about the product and the result. The team has been so dialed in and focused on trusting the process and I know they are hungry for that first win.
"If we can focus on our first set and first contact then we will be a lot happier with our result. This is a tough Alabama team that is playing really good volleyball, and we are going to have to rise to the occasion."
The match is MSU's third-straight nationally televised contest. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPNU with Dawn Davenport and former MSU volleyball coach Jenny Hazelwood on the call.
Wednesday's meeting will be the only matchup between the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide (10-5, 2-2 SEC) in 2019. Alabama has won the last four contests, with MSU's most recent victory coming in 2016.
Gabby Waden will look to keep her outstanding sophomore season going against the Crimson Tide. Among the six SEC student-athletes with at least 200 kills, Waden boasts the best hitting percentage with a .331 mark. The Columbia, S.C. native has tallied double-digit kills in 11 of 16 matches and at least eight in all but one contest.
Junior Kanani Price has been crucial for the MSU defense since taking over as State's starting libero in the SEC opener at No. 16 Kentucky. Price sits No. 9 in the SEC with 3.80 digs per set in conference play.
Sophomore Deja Robinson has also come up big defensively for the Bulldogs and is No. 6 in the league with 1.07 blocks per set.
