COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mississippi State volleyball started its three-match road stretch with a loss Sunday, falling to South Carolina in straight sets at the Volleyball Competition Center in Columbia, S.C.
Mississippi State nearly kick-started a comeback in the third set, but a challenge helped boost the Gamecocks to victory.
"It was another tough one for the Dawgs," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "I think we're inching closer and closer and we have to figure out ways to start matches with the same effort and intensity that we're finishing with."
Gabby Waden started slow, but helped carry the Bulldogs in the latter sets, totaling 11 kills. The sophomore has tallied double-digit kills in 11 of 15 matches this season and picked up 31 on the weekend.
Senior setter Alleah Stamatis had another nice performance, collecting 27 assists and eight digs. Junior Kanani Price led the defense with 14 digs.
"We have to go back to the basics this week and prepare for a tough Alabama team on Wednesday," Darty said. "I think it's going to boil down to our serve and pass game and if we can be more in system than our opponent. We just need to come out a little bit stronger out of the gate and have a risk-reward mindset where if we get after it and serve high risk from the service line, then we're going to be pleased with the product.
"Overall, I think we made some good in-game adjustments. Offensively, we have to be more efficient. Overall, when we're balanced, we're really good. We're going home hungry, and we're ready to work hard and find that first SEC win."
First Set (South Carolina 25, Mississippi State 11)
South Carolina got off to a hot start and kept it going the whole set, to take a 1-0 advantage.
Second Set (South Carolina 25, Mississippi State 23)
MSU lead early in the set until South Carolina took a 15-14 lead. The Bulldogs nearly re-tied it late, as a kill from Waden made it 24-23, Gamecocks. However, South Carolina survived with a kill on the next play.
Waden had four of her kills in the second set.
Third Set (South Carolina 28, Mississippi State 26)
Up 26-25, Mississippi State thought it had captured the third set via a kill by Amarrah Cooks. The call was challenged, however, and a net violation overturned the point and tied the set, 26-26. South Carolina's momentum carried them to the set and match victory.
The Bulldogs played strong in the final set, and led 23-20, but the late surge by the Gamecocks proved fatal.
