TULSA, Okla./WACO, Texas – The Mississippi State women's tennis team was in action Saturday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma and H-E-B Invitational in Waco, Texas. True freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk highlighted the day for the Bulldogs, registering back-to-back victories to advance to the final round of the ITA All-American prequalifying draw.
Mikhailuk, an alternate to the draw, learned early Saturday morning that she would even be competing in the field and took full advantage of the opportunity, notching a pair of victories while enduring two lengthy rain delays along the way.
The rookie opened play against Laura Bente of Memphis. After the two split sets, a rain delay of roughly two hours ensued before the players took the court for their deciding third set. Mikhailuk then went to work, jumping to a 3-1 lead and never looked back in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision.
In her round two affair (the start of which was delayed by rain for two-and-a-half hours and ultimately played indoors), the Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native put on an impressive performance against Miami's Yuna Ito, blanking the Hurricane 6-0, 6-0 in less than an hour on court.
Mikhailuk will face Rice's Anastasia Smirnova Sunday at 9 a.m. CT in the final round of prequalifying. The winner will advance to the qualifying draw, which begins Monday.
Also in action in Tulsa Saturday was sophomore Tamara Racine who fell to Margarita Skryabina of Texas Tech 6-1, 6-3 in her opening round contest.
At the H-E-B Invitational in Waco, Texas, true freshman Marta Falceto was defeated by Auburn's Carolyn Ansari in a tough 6-2, 7-6(4) consolation battle. Falceto will face Laura Rijkers of Arkansas on Sunday in another consolation matchup.
Prior to her singles match, Falceto will pair up with redshirt freshman Valeria Nikolaev in a doubles match against Auburn's Ansari and Georgie Axon at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday.
