TULSA, Okla./WACO, Texas – On the second and final day of prequalifying action at the ITA All-American Championships, Mississippi State women's tennis true freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk fell in the finals after notching two wins on Saturday. Meanwhile, State concluded action in the H-E-B Invitational in Waco, Texas, Sunday morning with fellow rookie Marta Falceto coming away with a victory.
After going undefeated on day one and advancing to the prequalifying finals in her first-ever ITA All-American appearance, Mikhailuk dropped a tough 7-6(4), 6-1 decision to Rice's Anastasia Smirnoff in Sunday's finals. Despite that setback, Mikhailuk is not done in Tulsa.
State will be represented by three Bulldogs in the ITA All-American qualifying draws beginning Monday. The sophomore-freshman tandem of Emma Antonaki and Mikhailuk will compete in the doubles draw, while junior Magda Adaloglou will represent the Bulldogs in singles. The qualifying draws will be released Sunday evening.
All of those players will be looking to move into the All-American's main draw which runs Oct. 9-13 in Tulsa. Antonaki, ranked 41stnationally in singles, is already entered into the tournament's 64-player main draw. Adaloglou and sophomore Tamara Racine – the nation's 14th-ranked duo - have already secured a spot in the 32-team doubles main draw as well.
In Waco Sunday at the H-E-B Invitational, Marta Falceto and Valeria Nikolaev were downed by Auburn's Carolyn Ansari and Georgie Axon 6-3 in a consolation doubles match.
The true freshman Falceto ended the tournament on a strong note, however, ousting Laura Rijkers of Arkansas 6-2, 6-4 in consolation action.
