STARKVILLE – Mississippi State volleyball's Newell-Grissom Building was alive Friday night (Oct. 4) as in-state rivals Ole Miss and MSU battled to a five-set contest.
Ole Miss (10-3, 2-0 SEC) outlasted Mississippi State (11-4, 0-3 SEC) despite a strong team showing from the Bulldogs.
After the Rebels opened the match with a 25-9 victory in the opening set, the State responded with consecutive set wins to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
"It was quite the match between two rivals," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "I thought we responded well after that first set, where we looked like we just weren't awake and present. It was incredible to come back in the second and third set like we did."
The Bulldogs led for a majority of the fourth set before Ole Miss snuck away with the set victory, and eventually the match as well.
"I think we had those opportunities in the fourth set, but we just didn't capitalize and close on it," Darty said.
"Overall, I was impressed with the composure that we showed in five sets of volleyball," Darty said. "I think this team is going to grow up and continue to mature with each match we play.
Four Bulldogs tallied double-digit digs in the match, as Kanani Price, MSU's libero, led the effort with 21. State totaled 71 total digs in the contest. State was outstanding defensively on the net, too, with 13 team blocks to Ole Miss' seven. Sophomore Deja Robinson had another great performance defensively, tallying nine total blocks.
"I think the presence we had at the net with 13 blocks was incredible," Darty said. "The defensive effort was special tonight."
MSU got another outstanding performance out of senior setter Alleah Stamatis, who earned her eighth double-double of the year to remain the SEC co-leader in that category. Her 50 assists set a new high for her career in Maroon and White. The senior also had 15 digs.
Gabby Waden, Paige Shaw and Amarrah Cooks all benefited from Stamatis' performance as the trio each collected double-digit kills. Waden led the team with 20 kills, her second 20-kill match of the season, and did so on a .357 hitting percentage. Cooks was State's most efficient attacker, killing 10 balls without error for a .435 hitting mark.
"Alleah did a great job of getting a lot of attackers involved," Darty said. "Our middle blockers hit at such high efficiencies, and then Gabby Waden had 20 kills. It was a good night offensively, but we made some late errors that cost us a couple points here and there.
"The rivalry lived up to its hype. It was a five-set battle on both sides and credit to Ole Miss, they are a great team, well prepared for us. We're going to go back to the drawing board and prepare for our next match on the road against South Carolina."
First Set (Ole Miss 25, Mississippi State 9)
Mississippi State just couldn't find a rhythm in the opening set as the Rebels came away with a 1-0 match lead.
Second Set (Mississippi State 25, Ole Miss 23)
Two kills by Waden and a Callie Minshew service ace fueled a 3-0 run that put the Bulldogs up 13-9 in the second set. The Bulldogs never relinquished their lead, though the Rebels came within 24-23 late. Robinson closed the set out, however, with a kill and tied the match at one apiece.
Third Set (Mississippi State 25, Ole Miss 18)
Mississippi State used its momentum take a 2-1 lead in the match. A 6-0 run, helped on by four straight Ole Miss attack errors, gave the Bulldogs a 7-2 lead in the set, and they didn't look back. State sailed to a seven-point second set win.
Shaw had five of her kills in the third set alone.
Fourth Set (Ole Miss 25, Mississippi State 23)
An early lead for Mississippi State turned into a back-and-forth battle between the two teams late in the fourth frame. The Bulldogs got out to a 4-1 lead and kept the advantage until Ole Miss tied the set at 20-20. The contestants traded blows, but Ole Miss came away with the close 25-23 set victory.
Fifth Set (Ole Miss 15, Mississippi State 12)
The Rebels earned an early lead in the final set and were able to hold on despite a few MSU advances. With match point set up for Ole Miss, the Bulldogs kept fighting, earning consecutive points.
