Volleyball Hosts Auburn Before Trip to No. 25 Mizzou
October 24, 2019 | Volleyball
By Austin Coats, Graduate Assistant/Communications
STARKVILLE – The last time Mississippi State volleyball hosted Auburn at the Newell-Grissom Building, the Bulldogs overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Tigers and collect the first SEC win of the Julie Darty era.
On Friday, Mississippi State (11-9, 0-8 SEC) will look for a repeat performance on their home court on Friday (Oct. 25) as it hosts Auburn (6-12, 0-7 SEC) for the first of two matchups between the teams in 2019. On Sunday (Oct. 27), MSU will have a second shot against a ranked opponent when it takes on No. 25 Missouri in Columbia.
"We are looking forward to welcoming Auburn to The Griss on Friday," Darty said. "It brings back some fond memories from last year, but this is a totally different team. We have to understand who they are and not just rely on what happened last year.
Friday's match will be televised via SEC Network with first serve set for 8:02 p.m. CT. Sunday's match in Missouri will start a 1 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
"We have had a great week of practice. We're still focused on the serve and pass game. We understand that it's always going to boil down to that. If we can pass the ball well and stay in system more than Auburn, I will be excited to see how this match turns out."
MSU split the 2018 series with Auburn but holds a two-match win streak against the Tigers at home.
Junior Kanani Price leads a Bulldog defense that ranks No. 3 in the SEC in digs (14.76 per set). Since taking over the starting libero spot at the beginning of SEC play, Price has averaged 4.33 digs per set, which ranks seventh in the league.
"Our defenders have had a great week of getting after it and understanding that it's going to take some effort to beat a really scrappy, good team in Auburn," Darty said. "Auburn is always well prepared and they're going to have a great game plan for us."
Sunday's trip to Missouri will be MSU's first trip to Columbia since 2017. MSU volleyball is still looking for its first-ever win against the Tigers.
"Sunday at Mizzou is going to be a really tough match, but right now it's all eyes on Friday," Darty said.
Promotions
Thursday night (Oct. 24), head coach Julie Darty will be giving out free cheese fries at local restaurant Bin 612 to the first 100 fans from 9:30-10:30 p.m. CT.
Friday's giveaways include Pumpkin Spice-themed snacks, including iced coffee, candy and other assorted items. Fans will also have a chance to win a CookOut prize pack, up to 200 Hail State Rewards Points and 150 Bully's Kids Club Points.
