AUBURN, Ala. – For the fourth year in a row, a member of the Mississippi State men's tennis team has claimed the singles crown at the ITA Southern Regional Championships as sophomore Gregor Ramskogler came out victorious Tuesday in this year's title match.
Ramskogler outlasted Tim Dollman of tournament host Auburn in three sets to claim biggest title of his Bulldog career. Ramskogler won seven consecutive matches over a six-day span to secure the crown, which included coming through the qualifying draw late last week. He has already notched more singles wins (10) this fall, than he did all of 2018-19 as a rookie.
Championship play commenced at the Yarbrough Tennis Center Tuesday with Ramskogler and the fellow qualifier Dollman battling each other tough. Ramskogler came out firing on all cylinders as the Bulldog cruised to a comfortable 6-2 first set win. However, the Tiger senior wouldn't go down easy, winning the last three games of the second set to claim it 6-4 and send the contest to a deciding third. Ramskogler showed no signs of fatigue or tiredness, jumping out to an early 3-1 lead. Dollman broke back to 5-4 late, but Ramskogler then broke right back to take the match and the championship 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
"This has been such an incredible tournament for Gregor and it shows, with hard work and a system of consistent applied accountability, these young men can continue to surprise themselves with their achievements," MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. "I am very impressed with our young team this fall. It is clear they are learning how to make needed adjustments in their matches and will never give up. We look forward to building more tough Bulldogs with the remaining fall schedule and to continue this contagious competitive culture."
With his win Tuesday, Ramskogler became the fourth-straight Bulldog to claim the ITA Southern Regional Championships singles title, joining All-Americans Nuno Borges (2016), Strahinja Rakic (2017) and Niclas Braun (2018) in the streak.
By reaching the finals this week, Ramskogler receives entry into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, California. There, he will join fellow Bulldog and senior All-American Giovanni Oradini who qualified for the Oracle by reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships earlier this fall.
The next competition for the Bulldog team will come Nov. 1-3 at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge, hosted by SMU in Dallas.
