Antonaki, Two MSU Doubles Teams Advance To Quarterfinals Of ITA Southern Regional Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State women's tennis went undefeated in doubles and posted a 4-2 record in singles on day two of the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Saturday, as Emma Antonaki in singles and two doubles teams moved into Sunday's quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs started the morning off with two victories in doubles. The seventh-seeded duo of Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk prevailed over Anna Loughlan and Luba Vasilyuk of host LSU in a tight 8-6 affair. The sophomore-freshman duo prepare to face Auburn's Georgie Axon and Madeline Meredith in the quarterfinals Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
MSU's second-seeded and 14th-ranked pair of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine rolled over Northwestern State's Mariella Minetti and Patrycja Polanska 8-2 to also advance to the quarterfinals. The combo resumes action Sunday morning against the No. 6 seed in Selin Ovunc and Taylor Russo of Auburn.
In singles action Saturday, State's Antonaki dropped just two games in posting two straight-set victories to advance to Sunday's main draw quarterfinals. The second-seeded and 41st-ranked sophomore cruised past Pei Ju Hsieh of Troy 6-0, 6-2 in her second round matchup. She then shut out Auburn's 15th-seeded Yu Chen 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the quarters where she will face fifth-seeded and 114th-ranked Taylor Bridges of LSU Sunday morning.
After an upset win on Friday, true freshman Bulldog Marta Falceto ousted Northwestern State's Dora Szcygielska 6-2, 6-3 in the second round Saturday before succumbing to Ole Miss' 12th-seeded Anna Vrbenska 6-1, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
State's fourth-seeded and 115th-ranked Adaloglou dropped a 6-3, 7-6(4) decision to Alabama's Ares Teixido Garcia in the second round.
Rounding out State's Saturday action, the rookie Mikhailuk made it a 2-0 record in consolation action this weekend with a tough three-set victory over UAB's Marlene Herrmann 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(7).
One round each of doubles and singles will be held Sunday. The two singles finalists and doubles champion from all of this weekend's ITA Regional Championships around the country will advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, to be held Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, California.
