Jones Sets School Record As Bulldogs Post Pair of Fifth-Place Team Finishes AT UAB Blazer Classic

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Senior Stephen Jones and junior Sylvia Russell led the Mississippi State men's and women's cross country teams to two fifth-place finishes at the UAB Blazer Classic on Friday.
Jones, competing for the first time this season, won the men's 8K and shattered the school record by 23 seconds with a time of 23:51.98. For the third time in 2019, Russell was the Bulldogs' highest finisher, crossing the line seventh. Russell's seventh-place finish marks her highest of the 2019 campaign.
"It was a solid performance for both teams," distance coach Patrick McGregor said. "Almost everyone ran up to their capability. We have a strong momentum to ride going into the SEC Championships."
No. 11 Florida State took the team title for the women's 6K, boasting four of the first 10 to cross the line.
After Russell's finish, Silvia De La Pena Garibay (14th), Ava Weems (27th), Kristy Terp (35th) and Sydney Steely (49th) rounded out the top five for MSU. De La Pena Garibay shattered her previous 6K personal best by over three minutes while Weems shaved off 1:29.
In addition to Jones' personal best, Blake Beavers, Clayton Fulgham, Brock Isom, Matthew Ray, Jacob Warner, Joseph Wohlers and Luke Zacharias also posted collegiate-best times for the men. DeLuca had another impressive performance as he was the second Bulldog to cross the line and finished 17thin 24:40.28.
Next, the Bulldogs will prepare for the 2019 SEC Cross Country Championships, held Nov. 1 in Louisville, Kentucky.
