MSU Concludes Play At Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA – The Mississippi State men's tennis team concluded match play at the 2019 Georgia Tech invitational Monday with a 4-4 overall mark in singles and doubles competition.

Doubles play started the final round of matches as MSU's top-seeded duo of Florian Broska and Stedman Strickland met Tennessee's Jordan Chysostom and Pat Harper in the Olde Gold Draw finals. The Bulldog pair fought hard as they pushed the match to a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell to the Volunteers 7-6(6), taking home runner-up honors. In the consolation bracket of the same draw, the freshman duo of Isaac Becroft and Nicolas Ocana met Vanderbilt's Georgia Harwell and Marcsen Sisam, ousting the Commodore tandem 6-1.

Concluding doubles play for the morning would be Gregor Ramskogler and Davide Tortora in the White Draw consolation bracket. The Bulldog duo met Miami's tandem of Franco Aubone and Benjamin Hannestad, falling 6-3 to the Hurricanes.

After doubles, singles cranked up with two Bulldogs vying for the crowns of their respective draws. In the White Draw title match, the Bulldog rookie Tortora dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Giles Hussey of Tennessee. Over in the Navy Draw, State's true freshman Becroft went the distance with Auburn's Diego Chavarria, ultimately falling in a marathon 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 slugfest.

In singles consolation play Monday, State's Broska had a tough defeat of his own, as Georgia's Erik Grevelius edged the MSU junior 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(4) in the Olde Gold Draw. MSU's Ramskogler had taken the first set 6-4 over Vanderbilt's Panu Virtanen in White Draw consolation play when the Commodore retired from the match. Rounding out State's consolation play was the junior Strickland in the Navy draw, who outlasted Miami's Pablo Aycart in a thrilling 6-7(5), 6-3, 1-0(5) victory.

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the 2019 ITA Southern Regional Championships, which will be host by Auburn University this coming week (Oct. 17-22). State swept the titles at the event last season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with Niclas Braun downing teammate Trevor Foshey in the singles final and Braun teaming with Giovanni Oradini to claim the doubles crown.
