Volleyball Set to Finish Road Stretch in Knoxville
October 12, 2019 | Volleyball
By Austin Coats, Graduate Assistant/Communications
STARKVILLE – A three-match journey on the road comes to an end Sunday (Oct. 12) for Mississippi State volleyball as it continues SEC play at Tennessee.
Despite some competitive matches so far in conference play, the Bulldogs (11-6, 0-5 SEC) are looking for their first SEC victory as they take on the Lady Volunteers (8-7, 2-3 SEC) at 12:30 p.m. CT in Thompson-Boling Arena.
"I know that this has been a tough road stretch, but I think it's made us tougher and really tested us," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "This team is moving in the right direction. I know it's hard to see the improvement when we haven't won a full match in a while, but the improvement is there, and the team is fully invested in working hard to get that first win. The SEC is tough, top to bottom, and to have an opportunity like we do against a very tough Tennessee team, I think the girls are hungry and excited to compete.
"The team is excited for another opportunity to battle and compete. After the marathon at Alabama, we were able to take a day off and reflect. We are in the toughest part of our season and sometimes you need to take the time to really look at your season from a different perspective."
Sunday's match will be streamed live via SEC Network+ and the Watch ESPN app.
The Lady Volunteers are holding on to a three-match win streak in the series, with MSU's last win coming in 2016 when the Bulldogs defeated Tennessee twice.
Its last time out, MSU won a marathon 39-37 second frame in the four-set loss at Alabama. The Bulldogs had four players with double-digit kills for the first time this season, including Gabby Waden who earned a team-best 18 kills.
Waden has been State's go-to hitter all season, leading the Bulldogs with 224 kills. Her .324 hitting percentage sits second among SEC players with at least 200 kills, just a tenth of a percentage behind Missouri's Kylie Deberg (.325).
Waden has been a benefactor of senior Alleah Stamatis, who has been an anchor for MSU in the setter position, especially of late. Stamatis is averaging 10.7 assists per set over her last three matches, and ranks tied for seventh for the season with 9.05 per set.
On defense, junior Kanani Price has played a huge role since taking over the starting libero spot in MSU's first SEC match at No. 16 Kentucky, leading an MSU squad that ranks No. 3 among SEC teams in digs. In five SEC contests, Price has averaged 4.32 digs per set, good for No. 6 in the conference.
