TULSA, Okla. – After this week's play at the ITA All-American Championships, Mississippi State senior Giovanni Oradini can easily call himself a fighter, as he pulled out three hard-fought singles wins against ranked opponents after being down a set in his first three matches. Oradini claimed his Round of 16 match Friday before falling in the quarters.
The 24th-ranked Oradini opened the day taking on No. 32 Gui Osorio of San Diego in the Round of 16. As he did in each of the first two rounds this week, Oradini overcame a one-set deficit to secure a win. Early on, Oradini had four break point chances to take the first set but Osorio dug in on serve and forced a tiebreaker that he won 7-6(4). But Oradini stormed back and took control in the final two sets to claim the match 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals later in the afternoon, the senior Bulldog's foe was Texas A&M's 45th-ranked Valentin Vacherot. Oradini began his quarterfinal appearance by coming out and competing with every ounce of fire and determination left in him. However, the Aggie pushed forward early and never really looked back in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Oradini ended the week with three top 90 wins, two in the top 40, while becoming the seventh Bulldog ever to reach the All-American's singles quarterfinals.
The other six members of State's team – Isaac Becroft, Florian Broska, Nicolas Ocana, Gregor Ramskogler, Stedman Srickland and Davide Tortora – will make the trek to Atlanta this weekend to partake in the 2019 Georgia Tech Fall Invite Saturday-Monday. The Bulldogs will join student-athletes from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Miami, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Live results will be posted daily at this link.
