STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 7/6 Mississippi State opened SEC at home with a resounding 86-71 win against No. 16/15 Kentucky Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (14-1, 2-0 SEC) won their 28th straight home game, 18th straight conference game and fifth straight conference home opener before a crowd of 8,830.
"That was a heck of a game," MSU head coach Vic Schaefer said. "I am proud of my team and the way they competed. I thought they were special today. We came out strong and punched them in the mouth early. Kentucky has an excellent basketball team. We played a lot of minutes at that pace; 86 points is a lot of points.
"To out-rebound that team by 24 is hard to do. That shows you the effort we were playing with," Schaefer continued. "Turnovers were not good. However, we made some big plays when we needed to."
Anriel Howard led the way with 21 points, while Chloe Bibby added 18 points, Jordan Danberry added 17 points and Teaira McCowan had 13 points.
Howard collected her second double-double this season by adding a game-high 12 rebounds. McCowan had her 12th double-double of the season, thanks to 10 rebounds. Danberry and
Jazzmun Holmes each had five assists.
The Bulldogs came roaring out of the gates. A 12-0 run pushed the early advantage to 19-5. Howard scored a pair of baskets and Chloe Bibby followed with a fast-break basket to cap the run.
A follow-up 7-0 run would push the lead to 26-7. Danberry scored on an old-fashioned 3-point play to highlight that run. In the opening quarter, the Bulldogs hit 10 of 20 shots from the field for a 26-11 lead.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats battled back to the cut the deficit to nine points. The Bulldogs responded on the defensive end to close out the first half on a strong note. Danberry scored as the half expired for a 41-27 lead.
The Bulldogs held a similar lead throughout a tightly-contested third quarter. Both teams kicked it into high gear offensively in that stanza. The Wildcats hit 9-of-16 shots in the quarter but still trailed 64-49 entering the final period.
In the final period, a 3-pointer by Bibby capped a 7-0 run to push the Maroon and White to 83-62 advantage with 3:19 left.
