MALIBU, Calif. – Another afternoon in sunny California made for a successful run for Mississippi State women's tennis' Magda Adaloglou. Coming off a pristine ledger on day one at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Adaloglou continued the trend on day two by capturing a straight-set victory and advancing to qualifying competition starting Tuesday.
Sunday's triumph earned Adaloglou a berth in qualifying competition Oct. 2-3, one step closer to earning a spot in the main draw Oct. 4-8.
The sophomore Adaloglou concluded her perfect 3-0 run in the prequalies Sunday with a straight-set victory in the final round, where she toppled a second-straight top 16 seed in Southern Cal's Salma Ewing - 7-6(3), 6-4. Adaloglou battled from behind in the first set, then took a close second set for the victory. Adaloglou will extend her stay for singles in the Golden State and also appear, partnered with Emma Antonaki, in qualifying doubles play.
The rookie Antonaki - the nation's 10th-ranked newcomer – was ousted by Arizona's Emma Wilson 6-2, 6-1 in Sunday's prequalifying finale. The freshman, a 9-16 seed in the draw, wrapped up the first day of prequalies with two tough wins.
In her second ITA All-American Championships' appearance, MSU senior Anastasia Rentouli also went undefeated through the first day of prequalifying competition, but was unable to triumph in the final round as she was eliminated by Oklahoma State's Katarina Stresnakova 6-1, 6-1 Sunday.
After Monday's off day, Adaloglou and Antonaki will return to action in Tuesday's first round of qualifying.
