MSU’s Adaloglou/Antonaki Secure Doubles Title At Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Wrapping up the second day of competition at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, the Mississippi State women's tennis team finished 1-2 in doubles and 4-3 in singles, with the Bulldogs' undefeated doubles tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Emma Antonaki accentuating action by seizing the doubles title of their draw, while each attaining a team-leading 4-1 overall mark so far.
"It was another long, hot day at the courts. We won some close battles to finish the day with a winning record," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Win or lose, we are learning valuable lessons."
Saturday play started with first-year duo rallying from a 7-6 deficit to defeat Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ema Lazic 8-7(1) to claim the doubles title in Flight 2. Adaloglou held her serve to take the match to a tiebreak where the pair rolled 7-1. The win marked Adaloglou's second-straight doubles title at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic. Also of note, Duke's McCarthy makes up part of the nation's top-ranked doubles pair alongside fellow Blue Devil, Ellyse Hamlin. Last year, McCarthy and Hamlin advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinal.
MSU's tandem of junior Sara Lizariturry and freshman Tamara Racine were ousted 8-3 by host Furman's Georgia Walker and Julia Adams on Saturday in Flight 3's seventh-place match.
In Flight 4, State's veteran team of seniors Janina Braun and Anastasia Rentouli battled Wake Forest's Mary Meredith and Joanna Zalewski in the that flight's consolation final. Braun and Rentouli fell 8-6 after rebounding from a first-round defeat on Friday.
Following completion of the doubles session, the tournament's singles draws got underway.
Adaloglou fell to Duke's No. 84 McCarthy 6-2, 6-4 Saturday in the Flight 2 semifinals. She will face North Carolina's Cameron Morra Sunday in the third-place competition.
In Flight 3, the freshman Antonaki fell to South Carolina's No. 96 Mia Horvit 6-2, 6-3 Saturday in the main draw semifinals for her first falter of the weekend. Antonaki will match up with Wake Forest's Chandler Carter for that flight's third-place match Sunday.
State's Rentouli outlasted North Carolina's No. 82 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, splitting the first two sets to lead to a dominating third-set victory in Flight 4's semifinals. Rentouli will go head-to-head with Vanderbilt's Carolyn Campana Sunday for the title of that draw.
In Flight 5, the MSU freshman Racine was overpowered in straight-sets by Florida State's Julia Mikulski 6-3, 6-1 in Saturday's semifinals. She will meet South Carolina's No. 81 Megan Davies on Sunday in the third-place match.
In Flight 7, MSU's Lizariturry notched a straight-set victory against Ohio State's Danielle Wolf 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday. She will face Georgia Tech's Dilila Said in the final round on Sunday. With her two victories Friday and Saturday, Lizariturry joins Rentouli as Bulldogs to be undefeated in singles over two days of action.
State's Janina Braun pulled out a tough three-set victory over Georgia Tech's Valeriya Deminova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in Flight 8's consolation semifinals. Braun's decision advances her to Sunday's consolation final where she will face Florida State's Ariana Rahmanparast to decide the flight's consolation champion.
Rounding out Saturday's singles action, MSU sophomore Meredith Roberts cruised past Eva Borders of host Furman 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation round robin to notch her first career win in the Maroon & White. She will face a second opponent in consolation action – to be determined Sunday.
MSU's first fall appearance will culminate in tomorrow's singles finale. Rentouli and Lizariturry will each vie for the title in their respective draws.
"I feel like we are in good shape for this time of year," said Greenan. "We have a lot to learn as a team, but also a lot of talent to work with. We need to finish strong tomorrow."
