COLUMBIA, S.C./CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two of Mississippi State's men's tennis players known for their strong doubles play shined in that area on the first day of action at the Gamecock Fall Invitational on Friday.
MSU freshman Gregor Ramskogler notched his first doubles win as a Bulldog to open up the day in Columbia, teaming up with Trevor Foshey for an 8-6 triumph over Georgia Southern's Martjin Kerssens and Antonio Muniz. The next test for Foshey and Ramskogler will be SEC counterparts Scott Jones and Adam Walton from Tennessee.
In singles, the 2018 SEC Tournament MVP Foshey opened by downing Duke's Robert Maciag 6-4, 6-4 to win his sixth-straight match dating back to last spring. That streak was snapped, however, in a hard-fought three-set battle against Yancy Dennis of host South Carolina later in the day.
In the singles consolation bracket, Ramskogler dropped a tough three-set decision to SMU's Tomas Vaise. Foshey and Vaise will square off in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
In Charlottesville at the 2018 UVA Masters, State's Florian Broska and Strahinja Rakic went undefeated in doubles play to open up their fall slate.
Teaming up for the first time as a doubles pair, Broska and Rakic did not disappoint, earning two quality wins to set up a trip to the finals of the White Doubles Draw. The State tandem downed host Virginia's Ryan Goetz and Matthew Lord by a 6-4 mark followed by another 6-4 victory—this time against Florida's Oliver Crawford and Johannes Ingildsen, the top-seeded duo in the bracket.
Broska and Rakic will square off against another Gator duo in Saturday's final, taking on second-seeded McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale, a pair that earned doubles All-American status after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship in 2018.
In the Blue Draw, State's seventh-ranked and top-seeded pair of Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini dropped a 6-2 decision to Columbia's Adam Ambrozy and Jackie Tang in the semifinals after a first-round bye. Braun and Oradini will take on Notre Dame's Ciamarra and McCormick in Saturday's third-place match at 8 a.m. CT.
Later in the day in singles, No. 109 Braun and Broska both dropped tough decisions to open singles action—Braun in three sets to Ambrozy and Broska in a 6-3, 6-3 contest to North Carolina State's Ivan Saveljic.
To round out the day, MSU's fifth-ranked Oradini and 43rd-ranked Rakic both fell in their openers—Oradini upended by Florida's Lukas Grief and Rakic to McClain Kessler, also a Gator. They will re-take the court Saturday in consolation play. Matches are set to start at 8 a.m. CT.

After returning from this weekend's tournaments, the Bulldogs will prepare for one of the top tournaments of the year—the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The week-long tournament, featuring the top talent in Division I college tennis, runs from Oct. 1-8.
