MSU Climbs Louisville Leaderboard, Led By Pichaikool, Clegg
September 15, 2018 | Men's Golf
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Peng Pichaikool's 5-under-66, aided by a season-best day from Ford Clegg, led Mississippi State men's golf to jump two spots into fourth place at the Louisville Cardinals Challenge on Saturday.
Once again, State played well on the front side of the Par-71, 7,101-yard University of Louisville Golf Club, as four Bulldogs played under par on their first nine holes during second round action. Finishing on the back nine, the Golf Dawgs carded a 5-under-279 for the round into a 9-under-par total.
Pichaikool played 32 holes without a bogey to start the first and second rounds. His bogey on 15 was hardly a blemish on another superb performance that has him in second at 12-under-par and three strokes behind the lead.
"I can't say enough about Peng and how he continues to compete at a high level every single round," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said.
As the Thailand native continues to approach the lead, State will look to dig further into the top 5 as the team tees off the final round of play at 7:54 a.m. CT on Sunday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
"Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day," Smith said. "We need to focus on the little things and stay in our moment. It will take all five guys being in their round all day in order for us to be successful."
Clegg helped boost the team to a 5-under-279 by carding a 4-under-67 performance, three strokes better than his previous season-best. After an even-par first round, the freshman catapulted up the player leaderboard Saturday into a tie for 11th.
"Ford had a huge round for us," Smith said. "He was steady all day and played a very clean round of golf."
Garrett Johnson started strong on the front nine with a pair of birdies, but had to settle for an even par round after some difficulty on the back. The junior shares 47th at 2-over-par for the weekend.
Senior Austin Rose and sophomore Hunter Hammett shot 4-over and 5-over-par respectively on Saturday.
Playing as an individual, Griffin Agent had his best of the two rounds, shooting just one shot over par in the second round. The sophomore is now tied for 65th and 4-over-par.
Duke continues to be the frontrunner, shooting 34-under between the two rounds, as Blue Devil Alex Smalley is the only player ahead of Pichaikool.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"We came out more focused and ready to go today. We got off to a hot start and played a very solid front nine. I thought we got a little bit out of our process on the back side. I felt like we were thinking about finishing a little bit rather than just staying in our moment. Ford had a huge round for us. He was steady all day and played a very clean round of golf. I can't say enough about Peng and how he continues to compete at a high level every single round. Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day.
