PEBBLE BEACH, California – Juniors Peng Pichaikool and Garrett Johnson delivered 3-under-69s in Friday's opening round of the Carmel Cup.
The duo, playing in their 14th consecutive tournament together, each collected five birdies on the day to finish in a tie for tenth and help the Mississippi State men's golf team post a 1-over-361 score.
"I got off to a solid start with three birdies through seven holes and was lucky enough to birdie the 18th hole at Pebble," Johnson said.
MSU started off strong with a 4-under-par performance on the front side of the Par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links but lost ground on the back nine to finish the day in a share for sixth.
"I really enjoyed getting today's round going and watching this new team compete," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "I felt like we got off to a solid start as a group today. We did some things well but we also left a lot out there. Simple mistakes cost us a bit coming down the stretch. Tomorrow will be a big day for us because it's our next opportunity. Peng and Garrett did a great job today keeping us in it."
State will look to bolt up the eight-team leaderboard in the second round of play on Saturday. The Bulldogs will enter the day five shots back of Arkansas for fifth place.
State is in the first group to tee off from hole No. 1, and freshman Ford Clegg will be the first Bulldog off at 9 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.
In his collegiate debut, Clegg shot a 77, but finished up with a pair of birdies on 16 and 18 to end the day in 45th.
Senior Austin Rose contributed with an even 72 in the first round of his senior season. Rose paced his day with an early eagle on the par-5 second hole.
Sophomores Austin Fulton and Hunter Hammett finished with a 75 and 76, respectively, playing for the first time in a Bulldog lineup.
"I was excited for Fulton, Clegg, and Hammett to get the opportunity to play, and I was proud of the way they carried themselves," Johnson said. "Peng and Rose went out and did exactly what I knew they would do and gave the team a solid round when we needed it."
Oklahoma leads the field after shooting 20-under to open, while the Sooners' Garett Reband sits atop the player leaderboard at 8-under.

Simple mistakes cost us a bit coming down the stretch. Tomorrow will be a big day for us because it's our next opportunity. Peng and Garrett did a great job today keeping us in it. As a whole, we made four birdies on 18 so we caught a little bit of momentum. We need to make sure we come out focused on our process."
Junior Garrett Johnson:
"Today was a big day for me. Playing at Pebble Beach and knowing this is the best college event you can compete in, the nerves can creep up quick if you start to think about the external factors. But today I stuck to my game and took ownership of where my game is right now. I got off to a solid start with three birdies through seven holes and was lucky enough to birdie the 18th hole at Pebble. But today wasn't about me, I was excited for Fulton, Clegg, and Hammett to get the opportunity to play, and I was proud of the way they carried themselves. Peng and Rose went out and did exactly what I knew they would do and gave the team a solid round when we needed it. I trust this team and know that we are going to fight till the end. Hail State!"
