PEBBLE BEACH, California – Sinking a pair of eagles on the second and sixth holes Saturday, Peng Pichaikool carded his best round in almost a year with a 6-under-66 in the second round of the Carmel Cup.
The junior from Bangkok, Thailand, sits alone for sixth going into Sunday's final round at the prestigious Par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links. Pichaikool shot a 69 in the first round for a two-round total 9-under-par, good for a share of fifth.
Fellow junior Garrett Johnson and freshman Ford Clegg followed Pichaikool with 2-under-70s in round two. Johnson's 5-under total so far this weekend has him tied for 15th. Clegg, making his collegiate debut this weekend, bounced back from an opening round 77.
As a team, Mississippi State improved from Friday to shoot a 6-under-354 in the second round, but lost ground on the leader board, falling into eighth place with a 5-under total. MSU will tee off from the first hole at Pebble Beach at 8:50 a.m. CT, with live scoring available on Golfstat.
"I thought we got off to a much better start today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "Peng, Garrett, and Ford did a very nice job giving us big rounds when we needed them. We need to make sure we have all 6 guys in the round tomorrow."
"I expect our guys to come out hungry and energized for the final round."
Sophomores Austin Fulton and Hunter Hammett each carded a 74 Saturday, and are tied for 40th and 43rd, respectively.
After an opening round 72, Austin Rose shot a 3-over-75 on Saturday. He and Clegg are tied for 35th.
Oklahoma and Garett Reband continue to sit on top of the team and individual leader boards.

We need to make sure we have all six guys in the round tomorrow. We got off to a nice start today but we need to do a better job maintaining momentum on the tougher stretch of the golf course. This is the first step in our journey. I expect our guys to come out hungry and energized for the final round. We need to clean up some simple mistakes and play Mississippi State golf."
Junior Peng Pichaikool:
"I played pretty well today. I hit a lot of shots in the right places. Even though my stretch between eight and 16 wasn't great, I was happy to have a solid finish on 17 and 18."
