STARKVILLE, Miss. – Another former Diamond Dawg is just one step away from MLB.
After batting .342 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs in 50 games with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay Rays affiliate), Nate Lowe earned his Triple-A call-up for the Durham Bulls on Wednesday (August 15).
In six games since making his debut, Lowe is batting .346 with two home runs and six RBIs.
Also in Triple-A, Zac Houston has extended his scoreless streak to 13.2 innings pitched over 12 appearances with the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers affiliate). Houston has struck out 22 batters and earned four saves over that span, while lowering his ERA to 1.29.
You can read about Houston and Mud Hens teammate and fellow Bulldog Jacob Robson making quick work of the Detroit Tigers minor league system in just two years here.
Now well-removed from minor league baseball as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen, Dakota Hudson earned his third win on Monday night to remain undefeated. Hudson did not allow a run through his first six appearances and 9.1 innings pitched, and boasts a 0.90 ERA through 10 total appearances.
His third win did not come easy, though. After a 6-4 St. Louis lead was relinquished in the ninth, Hudson was thrown into the fire with a man on third and just one out. It took just five pitches for Hudson to induce a groundout and strike out a batter before the Cardinals won the game on a walk-off home run in the bottom half of the ninth.
On Thursday, Hunter Renfroe became the first San Diego Padres player to hit a go-ahead ninth-inning grand slam since 2003, and the fourth Padre to ever accomplish the feat as San Diego edged Milwaukee, 8-4. Renfroe had also hit each of San Diego's last three grand slams. Thursday's grand slam was Renfroe's fourth homer in as many games - over that span he collected eight hits and 11 RBIs.
Adam Frazier continues to swing a hot bat for Pittsburgh. In 15 games since his July 25 recall to MLB, Frazier has 20 hits for a .417 average and 1.098 OPS to go along with nine doubles and a home run.
