STARKVILLE, Miss. – With a single in both the eighth and 10th innings, Mitch Moreland was one of three MLB All-Stars to have multiple hits in last week's Midsummer Classic.
Moreland was one of five players representing the Boston Red Sox for the American League squad after his first-half offensive production earned him his first-career MLB All-Star Game bid. He entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning and helped the AL to an 8-6 win in extra innings.
Playing for Boston's rival, the New York Yankees, Jonathan Holder just may be the best relief pitcher in MLB since he was recalled on April 21. Over 32 games since that date, Holder has compiled a 0.47 ERA, the best mark of any pitcher during that span (minimum 20.0 innings pitched).
Over 41.0 innings this season, Holder boasts a 1.76 ERA, 36 strikeouts and an incredible 0.780 WHIP that ranks fourth in MLB (minimum 20.0 innings pitched).
Moreland and Holder are two of five former Bulldogs playing in Major League Baseball, and make up part of the 33 players, staff and coaches all over professional baseball.
Zac Houston continues to dominate Triple-A hitters for the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers affiliate). Through 20.1 innings pitched, he's only allowed four earned runs, posting a 1.77 ERA.
Dakota Hudson picked up his 13th win of the season for the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals) on Thursday, which leads all Pacific Coast League pitchers by four.
In Double-A, Brent Rooker and Nate Lowe have each hit four home runs in their last 10 games. Rooker's 18 homers for the Chattanooga Lookouts (Minnesota Twins) are third most in the Southern League. Meanwhile, Lowe has blasted 11 dingers in just 37 games for the Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay Rays) this season while posting a .336 clip and a 1.041 OPS.
For the Mobile BayBears (Los Angeles Angels), Jack Kruger has his own hot streak going with 15 hits in his last 10 games for a .357 average.
Daniel Brown collected two wins as a reliever for the Single-A Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers) to emphasize a great week in which he allowed no runs on just one hit. Brown boasts a 3.78 ERA through 29 appearances this season.
Over in the California League for the Lancaster JetHawks (Colorado Rockies), Reid Humphreys has not allowed a run in his last 10 appearances (10.0 innings pitched). He has collected seven saves over that span, and his 21 this season leads the league by eight.
Hunter Stovall has been the sparkplug for the Grand Junction Rockies (Colorado Rockies Rookie affiliate). Entering his first game, Grand Junction had a 9-13 record. Since, the team is 11-2 with Stovall in the lineup.
The Chicago White Sox assigned Konnor Pilkington to the AZL White Sox on Wednesday, making him the final player from MSU's seven-player 2018 MLB Draft class to make his professional debut. A third-round pick, Pilkington was State's highest draft pick of the class.
