STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a record-breaking season that culminated in the second-highest team score at the NCAA Championships in school history, nine Mississippi State men have been named USTFCCCA All-Americans.
"This was a great year for our program," head coach Steve Dudley said. "The records and championships these athletes won speak for themselves, but I'm extremely proud of how we finished as a team. We preach the team first, and the men went out and nearly posted the highest score we've ever had."
NCAA javelin champion Anderson Peters led the way with one of MSU's three first-team selections. Peters is now second in school history while holding the MSU freshman record, the SEC Championship meet record and the NCAA Championship meet record after throwing 82.82m (271-9) in Eugene last week.
Nicolas Quijera earned first-team recognition after placing second in the javelin for the second year in a row. Quijera's throw of 80.21m (263-2) made MSU the first school ever with three men to throw farther than 80.00m (262-5). The Bulldogs are also the first program since North Carolina in 2007 to take the top two spots on the podium in the javelin.
Freshman standout Marco Arop broke the MSU freshman record in the 800m for the third time this season and is now second in school history after placing second at the Championships with a time of 1:45.25. Arop also earned a first-team selection.
The 4x400m relay team of Vince Castillo, Juston Waters, Stephan James and Rasheed Tatham placed 10th and earned second-team selections. Waters and Tatham both earned All-American honors on the 4x400m relay for the third consecutive year. Castillo was a first-team selection in 2016 for his part on the relay, while James took home second-team honors on the relay in 2017.
Dejon Devroe's 14th-place finish in the 800m along with Malcum Tatum's 15th-place finish in the 400m hurdles also earned second-team recognition. Devroe was a first-team selection in the indoor season.
Every Bulldog that made the trip to Oregon earned at least an honorable mention. Charles Brockman and Tatham were mentioned for their 400m hurdles races. Karson Kowalchuk (100m) and Ro'Derick Spears (110m) rounded out the men's selections.
Rhianwedd Price-Weimer joined the women's 4x400m relay team of Alon Lewis, Monica Mosley, Riley White and Keturah Smith in earning an honorable mention.
