Stephanie Peterson put together a strong finish in the 10,000m to run the fourth-fastest time in MSU history.
Distance Runners Add Two Marks to School Record Book

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After a disappointing afternoon, Mississippi State bounced back in the evening's distance races on the first day of the Penn Relays.
The Bulldogs landed two times inside the school's all-time outdoor Top Five. Antonia Hehr led off with the fourth-fastest 3000m time, finishing in 9:39.78 and taking 11th place. Stephanie Peterson posted the fourth-best 10,000m time in school history at 35:14.21. She finished fifth.
JT Mackay broke his personal best by more than 23 seconds in the 10,000m with a time of 31:14.24 for 15th place.
"We were hoping to get qualifying times for Stephanie and Shannon," distance coach Houston Franks said. "Those times will be on the bubble, but what a great finish out of Stephanie."
Despite claiming Top 15 finishes in all but one of their first six events, the afternoon portion of the day ended in disappointment.
Alon Lewis, Monica Mosley, Riley White and Keturah Smith have twice run faster than top-qualifier Duke's time in the women's 4x400m relay, but a mid-second-leg collision with Notre Dame derailed the Bulldogs' plans to advance to Sunday's Championship of America. MSU's team then stepped off the track along with the Irish.
"I tell kids all the time, 'If you fall, be sure to finish the race,'" head coach Steve Dudley said. "Unfortunately, if you don't finish the race in a prelim, I can't protest to get you through to the final."
The Bulldogs had been running well, near the front of the top-seeded heat, when Mosley got tangled up with Notre Dame's athlete entering the turn off the back stretch. As a result, MSU's 4x400m relay team did not qualify for either section of finals on Sunday.
Shayla Broughton matched her personal best with 1.67m (5-5.75) in the high jump to place 10th, narrowly missing out on a tie for fourth. The Nos. 4-9 finishers all cleared 1.67m but did so on fewer attempts.
The Penn Relays continue on Saturday with qualifying heats for the men's 4x100m, both 4x200m relays and the men's 4x400m relay. Bulldogs will chase Championships of America in the men's and women's shuttle hurdle relays and sprint medley relays along with the men's distance medley relay.
