STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State's track and field program will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, this weekend for the 51st running of the Tennessee Relays.
The meet will offer the Bulldogs a preview of the Southeastern Conference Championships that will be hosted by Tennessee at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium in May.
"This is a big meet for us," head coach Steve Dudley said. "This is essentially our last full squad meet before the conference championships, which will be right back here. We need to come out and run well to prepare for May."
MSU will be one of five SEC teams competing in Knoxville this weekend. Of those, Kentucky is ranked on both the men's and women's sides, while Tennessee's women and South Carolina's men are also in the Top 25.
The SEC leads the nation with 20 of its 27 teams inside the Top 25. No other conference has more than nine.
Ohio State, with its No. 22 men's team, and Virginia Tech's No. 13 men and No. 18 women will also be in attendance.
The meet begins Thursday, though only four events will be contested. The first day of the heptathlon and decathlon open the morning with the men's and women's hammer throw closing the evening.
Friday and Saturday's competition will be streamed on WatchESPN. Multi-events will conclude on Friday before individual running events begin at 1:45 p.m. CT. Individual field events kick off at 2 p.m.
Saturday is highlighted by the relays, including a team of professionals made up of Justin Gatlin, Christian Coleman, Ronnie Baker and Mike Rogers that will attempt to break the American 4x100m relay record. They will run at 1:10 p.m.
