KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – While the rest of the team was still traveling, three Mississippi State athletes got the Bulldogs off to a good start at the 51st Tennessee Relays on Thursday afternoon.
Shayla Broughton and Zaria Tillman competed in the morning's heptathlon, where Broughton broke her personal best in three of the day's four events. The two combined to win three of the four events as well.
"We're off to a good start," head coach Steve Dudley said. "Now we just have to keep it going tomorrow. We're looking for some fast times. This is our chance to get a feel for the track we'll be running on in the conference championships."
Broughton won the 100m hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.67, then followed that performance by winning the high jump with a personal-best leap of 1.67m (5-5.75).
Tillman won the 200m with a wind-aided time of 24.74 as both she and Broughton ran the best times of their career. Broughton finished with a wind-aided 25.16.
Brianna Smith wrapped up the day as the top collegiate finisher in the women's hammer throw. She launched the implement 60.98m (200-0).
Friday and Saturday's competition will be streamed on WatchESPN. Multi-events will conclude on Friday before individual running events begin at 1:45 p.m. CT. Individual field events kick off at 2 p.m.
