Track and Field Returns to College Station for NCAA Indoor Championships

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Five Mississippi State student-athletes will compete at the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning Friday in College Station, Texas.
Seniors Logan Boss, Rhianwedd Price-Weimer and Tiffany Flynn return to the national championships while 800m runners Marco Arop and Dejon Devroe will make their first career appearances.
"That's three very good women that are going in there," head coach Steve Dudley said. "There's probably some teams of 10 or 12 that wish they had a team of those three. But when you're young like Marco and Dejon, you can go into a situation where you really don't have anything to lose. That's a pretty dangerous situation when you can put yourself in that mindset."
Boss, the Southeastern Conference champion in the high jump, will go for the last item on her list of goals for her career - her first national championship. She earned a first-team All-SEC selection with her performance after clearing a height of 1.91m (6-3.25) to set a new SEC Championship meet record in College Station two weeks ago. She also holds both MSU's indoor and outdoor school records in the event.
The winner of the high jump at the SEC Championship has gone on to win the event at nationals in three of the last four years.
Price-Weimer has won a national title before, claiming the 2015 outdoor 1500m crown, but is looking for her first championship in the mile distance. She finished second at this year's SEC Championships and is the top British athlete in the event this season.
Flynn, the MSU record holder in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump, will compete in that discipline. She ranks ninth in the NCAA this season and holds the 19th-best jump among American athletes at 13.26m (43-6.0).
"Overall, the SEC has been very competitive," Flynn said. "I think we all have done the best we can this year to make sure we get there and accomplish our goals."
The two newcomers, Devroe and Arop, have both made it to nationals in their first season of Division I competition. Devroe spent time at Shorter University before joining the Bulldogs and made the Division II national championships last year where he finished fourth. Arop, the only freshman in his event, is getting his first taste of nationals competition.
Arop holds the second-fastest 800m time in MSU indoor history and broke the freshman record earlier this season. Devroe is right behind him with the third-fastest time.
Price-Weimer opens the action on Friday at 5:50 p.m. CT with Boss jumping at 6 p.m. Arop and Devroe run the 800m at 7:15 p.m. Flynn will compete in the triple jump at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Should they advance to the finals, Price-Weimer is back on the track Saturday at 4:20 p.m and Arop and Devroe would run the 800m finals at 5:30 p.m.
The championships will be broadcast on ESPN3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. ESPN2 will re-air the event on Sunday at 6 p.m. Live results are available through the NCAA's website.
