Boss Wins Bronze, Two Bulldogs Advance to Saturday Finals

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – For the second year in a row, Mississippi State high jumper Logan Boss claimed a bronze medal at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.
"I want to stress how proud we are of the fight Logan showed today," head coach Steve Dudley said. "She had more pressure on her than anyone in the building in the high jump. We preach over and over, and Logan gets this, that when you're having a bad day, you have to find a way to have the best bad day you can."
Boss was one of three athletes to clear 1.87m (6-1.5), but it took her all three attempts. Though no athlete cleared the next height of 1.90m (6-2.75), both Cincinnati's Loretta Blaut and North Carolina's Nicole Greene had needed only two chances to get over the previous bar, resulting in Boss' third-place finish.
"It was a hard-fought battle, harder than any competition I've had all year," Boss said. "That's simply because things weren't going my way today and weren't as easy as I'd like them to be. I knew I had to fight for it, and I fought all I could."
Boss' performance gives the Bulldog women six points with the opportunity for as many as 20 tomorrow.
"She was coming back and fighting and clearing bars on the third try, and we couldn't ask for any more fight out of her," Dudley said. "I'm more proud of her tonight than for any meet she's won or record she's set this year."
On the track, two Bulldogs advanced to tomorrow's finals. Rhianwedd Price-Weimer was the first MSU athlete in action and the fastest runner in the women's mile prelims. She won her heat in 4:37.71 to advance to tomorrow's final in the event set for 4:20 p.m. CT.
In the men's 800m, Dejon Devroe, who slipped in as the final qualifier to make the championships, advanced with an eighth-place finish in the prelims. Devroe's time of 1:48.17 beat the ninth-place finisher by just 0.07 seconds. He is the first No. 16 seed to advance in the 800m since 2014 when Washington State's Jesse Jorgensen advanced and placed eighth.
"I felt like I got out well and took control of the lower pack," Devroe said. "I let a gap form between me and the front pack, which I can't let happen tomorrow, but I'm grateful for the kick that I had at the end."
Marco Arop, the only freshman in the event, surged forward to lead the penultimate lap, but fell behind in the final turn and down the home stretch to place 11th in 1:48.55.
"That's me. Coach has to do a better job," Dudley said. "I'm proud of Dejon. He fought like crazy to get in there, but I've got to do better with Marco, and I will."
Tomorrow begins for the Bulldogs with Tiffany Flynn competing in the triple jump at 3:30 p.m. CT. She is followed by Price-Weimer and Devroe, who will race at 5:30 p.m.
The championships will be broadcast live on ESPN3 beginning at 4 p.m. ESPN2 will re-air the event on Sunday at 6 p.m. Live results are available through the NCAA's website.
