MSU Women’s Tennis Falls In Tight Affair At No. 18 Auburn
March 08, 2018 | Women's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – Despite a strong rally effort in singles, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (9-5, 0-3 SEC) fell 4-0 to No. 18 Auburn (13-5, 2-1) Thursday night at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in a match that was not indicative of the final score by any means.
"I feel like our girls put it all out there, but we came up just short," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We needed to win a few more big points to sway the match our way. I thought we handled some adversity, but there are still a few things within our control we can improve."
The Tigers came out strong in doubles defending the home courts. On court 3, AU's Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith made quick work of MSU's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-1, the MSU pair's first setback in seven outings. Clinching the doubles point on court 1, the 70th-ranked Tiger pair of Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo held off State's Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-3 to give AU an early 1-0 lead.
Despite dropping the first point, the Bulldogs made a big surge to open singles as they took four of the six first sets. Four singles contests would ultimately go to a third set and another would be decided in a nip-and-tuck straight-set affair.
First off the court, AU's 80th-ranked Daniel posted a 6-1, 6-3 triumph against Bulldog Janina Braun on court 2. With State still battling hard, Tiger Meredith fended off State true freshman Magda Adaloglou 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot for a 3-0 AU lead.
Even down 3-0, the Bulldogs still had a chance, with the last four matches of the evening all going three sets. But Auburn would get the win it needed on court 1, where Michaud posted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over State's Harrison.
The remaining matches were suspended in the third set with MSU holding leads on two of the three courts. MSU's Rentouli led Tiger Taylor Russo 6-0, 3-6, 3-2 on court 4. State's Lizariturry trailed 4-6, 6-4, 2-1 to Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic at No. 5. Bulldog Vozniak was leading AU's Georgie Axon 7-5, 1-6, 2-1 at the No. 6 spot.
