MSU Women’s Tennis Rallies For 4-3 Victory At No. 49 Alabama
March 10, 2018 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Despite going down 3-1 in the match, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (10-5, 1-3 SEC) fought back for an exciting 4-3 victory against No. 49 Alabama (12-7, 0-4) Saturday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The win was State's fourth-straight over the Crimson Tide.
With the match tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to court 4 for the deciding point where State junior Anastasia Rentouli had just forced a third set when all other matches had finished. Rentouli, with her teammates cheering her on and fighting through a short rain delay in the first game, would be undeterred. After trading several service breaks with Alabama's Ann Selim, Rentouli gained a 5-3 lead late in the deciding set and held serve for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 match-clinching triumph.
"We expected a battle today and it was!" head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I couldn't be prouder of how we competed. We had to overcome plenty of adversity to get the win. I think our best is still ahead of us, but today we got better and this win should help our confidence. We played excellent at number 1 and 3 in doubles and we knew that point was important. Alabama came out with great energy and had a big crowd at the match. We had a slow start and didn't play our best singles, but ultimately had enough courage and heart to get the job done. Magda, Sara and Ana all came up big when the match was on the line."
With MSU trailing 3-1, true freshman Magda Adaloglou started the comeback, posting a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 triumph against UA's Pelletier on court 3. Knotting the match up at 3-all, State's Sara Lizariturry completed an inspired come-from-behind victory of her own against the Tide's Kylie Moulin - 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 on court 5 - that would set the stage for Rentouli's deciding match.
To open the afternoon's action, the Bulldogs came out hot in doubles as Lizariturry and Rentouli vanquished UA's tandem of Smith Hinton and Jacqueline Pelletier 6-1 on court 3. Posting the same score of court 1, State's duo of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak upended the Tide pair of Andie Daniell and Luca Fabian to give MSU an early 1-0 lead.
Despite dropping the opening point, the Tide rebounded in singles to take five of the six first sets.
First off the court, UA's Hinton overpowered Bulldog Janina Braun 6-4, 6-2 on court 2. With State starting to make a comeback on the other courts, the Tide's 124th-ranked Daniell held off the Maroon & White's Harrison 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to give UA its first lead of the day at 2-1. The Tide would extend to a 3-1 lead when Alba Cortina-Pou outlasted the Bulldogs' Vozniak 6-3, 7-6(5) at No. 6.
Then the Bulldogs started their incredible rally.
