COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In a match that could have gone either way down the stretch, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (14-6, 5-4 SEC) ultimately could not overcome No. 33 Texas A&M (15-4, 5-3 SEC), falling 4-1 at the Mitchell Tennis Center Friday night.
The setback ended State's school-record, five-match SEC winning streak.
"We had a few things working against us today and unfortunately we were not able to overcome them," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Credit to A&M for outplaying us in the end. We just need to regroup and get ready for another tough one Sunday. We have done well carrying momentum after big wins lately, and now our challenge is to rebound after a tough loss."
The Aggies defended their home courts early, coming out strong in doubles as Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma made quick work of State's Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-2 on court 1. Posting the same score on court 2, TAMU's Tatiana Makarova and Riley McQuaid vanquished MSU's Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun giving A&M the early 1-0 lead.
TAMU carried that momentum into singles, taking four of the six first sets. First off the courts, A&M's Macarena Olivares posted a straight-set – 6-2, 6-1 – triumph against the Bulldogs' Braun on court 2, extending the Aggie lead to 2-0.
Giving MSU its lone point of the day, State's Vozniak claimed a straight set 6-3, 6-4 victory over Aggie Dorthea Faa-Hviding on court 6. Vozniak is now 11-2 in dual matches this spring.
The Aggies then answered by taking the next two matches to clinch the match. On court 4, A&M's McQuaid upended State's Anastasia Rentouli 6-3, 6-1. Clinching the match at No. 5, the Aggies' Makarova held off MSU's Sara Lizariturry in a three-set battle - 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 - to secure the 4-1 victory.
The remaining matches were suspended with State's Harrison knotted in the third set against TAMU's No. 119 Gonzalez 6-3, 4-6, 1-1 on court 1. At No. 3, MSU's Adaloglou was in position to split sets with A&M's Paalma 4-6, 5-4.
Next Up For MSU…
MSU concludes its current four-match SEC road swing Sunday, April 1, at No. 47 LSU. Match time is slated for Noon CT.
