Late Innings Doom Dawgs Against No. 11 Vanderbilt
March 17, 2018 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – An early pitcher's duel turned into a lopsided victory late for No.11 Vanderbilt as they defeated No. 19 Mississippi State 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
Vanderbilt improved to 14-5 and 2-0 in the SEC, while MSU fell to 10-9 and 0-2.
Ethan Small (1-2) started on the mound for the Bulldogs and was impressive in 6.1 innings, only giving up 1 run (1 earned) on 4 hits, while striking out eight.
"Ethan Small was outstanding." MSU head coach Gary Henderson said. "Just like Konnor Pilkington last night, he took his performance to a whole new level. We just have to continue to grow and get better as a team."
Vanderbilt picked up a run in the first inning before blowing the game open late with seven runs in the eighth and 2 runs in the ninth.
MSU looked to be out of the first inning unscathed before a wild pitch on a swinging strike three allowed the Commodores a base runner who would later go on to score.
The Commodores sent 11 batters to the plate in the seven-run eighth inning which included seven base hits. Vanderbilt added two more runs of insurance in the top half of the ninth.
The Bulldogs got on the board off of a Tanner Allen solo home run to right field in the ninth
inning.
Luke Alexander, Josh Hatcher and Allen each picked up two hits.
The Bulldogs and Commodores will complete their series on Sunday with an 11 a.m. CT first pitch from Dudy Noble (previously scheduled for 1 p.m.). Gates to Dudy Noble will open at 10 a.m. CT. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+ via WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app. Tickets for Sunday's game and all future Diamond Dawgs home games can be purchased at HailState.com/tickets.
