Javelin Throwers Open Outdoor Season at Jaguar Classic
March 15, 2018 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Nicolas Quijera and Anderson Peters will open Mississippi State's outdoor track and field season on Friday at the Jaguar Classic, hosted by South Alabama.
The women's javelin is tentatively scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT with the men's competition to follow.
"The guys have been working hard and are very excited to get out and compete," throws coach April Thomas said. "They compete in one event and it's only outdoors, so this week gives them a chance to get started and sort of catch up to everyone else on the team who was able to compete during the indoor season."
Quijera placed second in the event at last year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and is second in school history with a career-best throw of 76.77m (251-10) at that meet. He earned a first-team All-American selection for his efforts.
Peters begins his MSU career after redshirting last season. He competed unattached at the Bulldog Relays, which he won with a throw of 75.29m (247-0). Peters holds the Grenadian national record (84.81m, 278-3) and is a five-time CARIFTA Games champion.
The rest of the Bulldogs will open the season at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville on March 23-24.
