MSU Women’s Tennis Rally Falls Short In 4-2 Setback To No. 13 South Carolina
March 01, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite a valiant comeback effort, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (8-3, 0-1 SEC) fell in a tough 4-2 battle to No. 13 South Carolina (9-3, 1-0 SEC) Thursday night at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The match, the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams, was pushed back from 3 to 5:30 p.m. CT due to rainy conditions Thursday morning and afternoon.
"We started out a little flat today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "South Carolina plays very aggressive doubles and we would have had to play our best level with high energy and we did neither. I am proud of the way we competed in singles. We really worked our way back into the match and gave ourselves a chance. As long as we keep battling like we did today we are going to win our share. Overall, I think it was an encouraging performance on our part. We definitely appreciate the crowd support. A special thanks to the men's team for providing some additional energy from the stands! Hail State!"
The Gamecocks had an aggressive start in doubles as the tandem of Mia Horvit and Ingrid Martins blanked MSU's pair of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun 6-0 on court 2. Clinching the doubles point, USC's tandem of Hadley Berg and Paige Cline overpowered State's duo of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-2 at No. 1, giving the Gamecocks an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs fought back in singles, however, splitting the opening sets evenly with the Gamecocks to get back into the match. USC would get the first two singles points as Rachel Rohrabacher downed State's Caroline Kelly 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Following close behind on court 1, USC's 45th-ranked Berg defeated MSU's Braun by the same score, extending the Gamecock lead to 3-0.
But State had claimed the first set in three of the four remaining contests and made a strong rally towards a potential comeback win.
State took the next two singles matches. Bulldog Sara Lizariturry outlasted USC's Megan Davies 7-5, 6-3 on court 5. At No. 4, Bulldog Anastasia Rentouli finished off an inspired 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Gamecocks' Cline, making the team score 3-2 USC.
The final two affairs of the night went to third sets.
USC's 124th-ranked Martins would ultimately get the clincher as she battled from a set down for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph against MSU's Harrison on court 2, making the final score 4-2.
In the remaining match, State's Adaloglou had just forced a third set with USC's Horvit with the Gamecock leading 1-0 early in the final frame when play was suspended.
Next Up For MSU…
State closes out its five-match homestand Saturday hosting No. 34 Florida and Alcorn State in a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m. CT.
