Bulldogs Look to Bounce Back in Final Round of SunTrust Gator Invitational
February 17, 2018 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As it began its spring season, the Mississippi State men's golf team finished Saturday in 15th place after two rounds at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
State shot an 8-over 288 in the first round and a 295 in the second round of the tournament, hosted by Florida at par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
"Today was a tough day for our team," MSU head men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "We didn't handle adversity well and we didn't do the little things well. We never had all five guys in it and we weren't able to gain much momentum out there."
The best individual performance came from freshman Cameron Clarke, who shot a 1-over 141 while competing strictly as an individual.
Clarke shot just better than Peng Pichaikool, who led the MSU team by firing a 142.
Vanderbilt led the field, shooting an 8-under 552, and Claudio Correa, of South Florida, carded a 65 and a 69 to finish the day atop the individual leaderboard.
The Bulldogs will have an opportunity to improve their weekend on Sunday as they play in the final round, with tee-time set at 7 a.m. CT for the first group.
"Tomorrow will be a big day for us," Smith said. "It will be a character day. We are going to challenge ourselves to respond in a positive way after today's rounds. Today will only hurt us if we don't grow and learn from it. We have some hungry guys on this team and I am looking forward to watching them compete and represent Mississippi State tomorrow."
