STARKVILLE – For the third consecutive semester, Mississippi State student-athletes combined to produce a 3.0 grade point average or higher as the department's fall all-sport scholarship mark of 3.17 was the highest on record.
"I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of our Mississippi State student-athletes," Director of Athletics John Cohen said. "They continue to raise the bar every semester with their excellence in the classroom. Another school-record GPA speaks volumes of their character as well as the level of commitment from our coaches and academic support staff. I congratulate each and every one of them as well as Christine Jackson and the entire academic support staff."
In addition, a total of 29 Bulldogs received their academic degrees, including 18 members of the Outback Bowl-bound football team.
"I am tremendously proud of our student-athletes' achievements and how hard they worked this semester," said Christine Jackson, Associate Athletic Director/Executive Director of Athletic Academics. "The dedication of the athletic academics team along with the ongoing support of coaches and administration led to our most successful semester ever."
Excellence in competition and academic success have gone hand in hand at Mississippi State. The 3.17 all-sport scholarship GPA broke last year's fall record. Eleven Bulldog teams produced a 3.0 GPA or higher, including baseball, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track and field, women's basketball, women's golf, soccer, softball, women's tennis, women's track and field and volleyball.
A total of 263 student-athletes earned a spot on the Bulldog Honor Roll with a fall 2018 semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. A stellar 67 percent of MSU student-athletes produced a 3.0 or higher this semester with an impressive 59 Bulldogs scoring a perfect 4.0 GPA to receive "Top Dawg" accolades.
Women's scholarship student-athletes combined to post a 3.42 GPA with all seven teams finishing above a 3.0. Women's golf led the way with highest mark at 3.71. Women's basketball produced its second-highest GPA ever with a 3.38. Volleyball's 3.51 GPA was the program's highest on record for a fall or spring semester, eclipsing the previous best of 3.49 in the spring of 2010.
