
No. 6 MSU Raises Banner, Routs Coppin State

STARKVILLE – Teaira McCowan led the way as one of seven Mississippi State players in double figures as the No. 6 Bulldogs beat Coppin State 110-38 Sunday afternoon at the Humphrey Coliseum.
MSU improved to 4-0 and dominated the competition before a coliseum crowd of 7,320. In a ceremony prior to the game, members of the 2017-18 team joined together for the raising of the National Finalist banner.
"I was really proud of how we came out and started the game," MSU head coach Vic Schaefer said. "We have been looking at consistency. We wanted play well for four quarters. Really pleased at how we came out and played. We had a high energy level."
The Bulldogs scored 40 or more points in a quarter for a second straight game as it tallied 41 in the first quarter to build a 41-6 lead.
McCowan led the Bulldogs with 23 points. She was followed by Andra Espinoza-Hunter and Jessika Carter (16 points each), Anriel Howard (15 points), Chloe Bibby (11 points), Bre'Amber Scott and Jordan Danberry (10 points).
Carter and McCowan each had five blocked shots. McCowan fell shy of a double-double with six rebounds, but she tallied her 10th straight game in double figures. She has scored 20 or more points seven times in that stretch.
The Bulldogs scored 68 points in the paint, was well as scoring 50 points off 31 turnovers.
MSU shot 71.1 percent from the field in the first half to lead 64-16 at halftime.
For the contest, the Bulldogs hit 45 of 71 shots from the field (63.4 percent), 7 of 16 shots from 3-point range (43.8 percent) and 13 of 22 shots from the foul line (59.1 percent). The Eagles hit 11 of 56 shots from the field (19.6 percent), 3 of 18 shots from 3-point range (16.7 percent) and 13 of 16 shots from the foul line (81.3 percent).
MSU held a 48-28 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had 29 assists and 15 turnovers, while the Eagles had six assists and 31 turnovers.
Coppin State (0-4) received 16 points and 10 rebounds from Chance Graham.
MSU will host Furman at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
