Family support and work ethic have led to success, on and off the court, for Kath
by Carmen Smith, Athletics Communications Student Assistant
Morgan Kath sat down to reflect on her athletic career.
"I started playing club [volleyball] when I was ten," Kath said. "I played a lot of other sports, too. I was in track and field and played basketball at the time."
But volleyball was always her passion and it was what stuck following high school. The team aspect of this sport was what Kath enjoyed the most.
During her junior year of high school, the Muskego, Wisconsin native, was recruited by a number of college programs. Kath chose Stony Brook University located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. She chose to join the program because of the coaching staff and student-athletes.
"I really enjoyed the people there," said Kath, "but when the coaching change happened, I took that opportunity to find something different and gain experience somewhere else."
As Kath searched for her next opportunity, Mississippi State landed on her radar. She reached out to the coaching staff and soon came for her first visit to Starkville.
"I really liked the small town and everything seems to revolve around the university," Kath said. "That is something I had never had before."
One of the aspects that drew Kath to love Starkville was the family atmosphere. As someone who is family oriented herself, Kath knew she would feel right at home.
"Everyone is very open to helping you, whether it is the nutritionist or the trainers or the coaches," said Kath. "Everyone is there for you. I think that is really vital when you are a student-athlete."
Although Kath loves Starkville, she is still twelve hours from her childhood home in the Badger State. Her family has helped make her transition – to both Stony Brook and Mississippi State – smooth with their constant support.
"It's nice to have a family that travels wherever you are. They come to everything." said Kath.
With her family's support and her own drive to work hard, Kath is focused on preparing for her future. Her dedication in the classroom will pay off when she graduates this spring with a degree in business administration.
Although she is uncertain of her plans after graduation, she is certain of one thing – she wants the Mississippi State volleyball family to continue to grow.
"We have to go further than we are and we are on the track to get there," Kath said. "I don't want to leave. It's going to be tough to not be a part of [the program] after this year."
Kath says her work ethic is what she has contributed to this growth and hopes future Bulldog student-athletes will develop the same type of drive.
Her advice for those to-be-Bulldogs?
"Work hard every single day," said Kath. "You never know where you could be if you don't work hard in everything you do. I might not have been the best player on the court, but I can leave this sport knowing I gave it everything, mentally and physically. Throughout my career, I just worked hard."
Morgan Kath will celebrate her senior day on Friday, November 16 versus Alabama. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Newell-Grissom.
