DALLAS, Texas – Mississippi State women's tennis brought home a doubles title and co-champion singles crowns from the SMU Invitational on Sunday, marking the program's second and third individual titles since the fall stretch opened in late September.
MSU concluded the final day of play with a 1-1 doubles mark, with Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry capturing the #1 Doubles draw title. True freshman Tamara Racine and Lizariturry shared the #2 Singles draw crown.
State's tandem of Braun and Lizariturry went unbeaten this weekend while playing together for the first time. In Sunday's #1 Doubles final, the pair posted a convincing 6-2 victory over Houston's Phonexay Chitdara and Sophie Gerits to cruise through to the championship.
MSU's duo of Racine and Meredith Roberts dropped their final matchup in Sunday's third-place decision – 6-1 - to host SMU's Ana Perez-Lopez and Karina Traxler.
State posted a notable 3-1 ledger in the final day of singles play in the top two draws.
The rookie Racine and veteran Lizariturry shared co-champion honors in the #2 Singles draw. Racine snagged her first career title in the Maroon & White, overpowering Austin Peay State's Tatiana Nikolaeva - 6-4, 6-1 – to improve to 4-1 in singles this fall. Lizariturry came out swinging in another impressive showing, as she extended her win streak to six straight matches to open the 2018 fall season. On Sunday, she bested the Mustangs' Sarai Monarrez Yesaki 6-2, 6-2 in #2 Singles action. The junior was State's lone player to go untouched in singles and doubles on the weekend, attaining an unbeaten 6-0 mark.
MSU's senior Braun found redemption in Sunday's #1 Singles draw. Dominating Middle Tennessee's Zani Barnard 6-4, 6-4, she earned the third-place honor in that draw. The sophomore Roberts fell in a #1 Singles consolation decision, a 6-4, 6-4 setback to SMU's Traxler.
The MSU quartet ended its stay in Dallas by posting overall 3-3 doubles and 9-3 singles ledgers.
"Our final day of competition was solid overall. I feel like we are making progress," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "The girls are getting more organized with their games. These matches have been good learning experiences and should help us moving forward this fall."
