OXFORD, Miss. – Mississippi State's women's tennis squad opened with an impressive showing in Friday's inaugural day of play at the ITA Southern Regional Championships. The Bulldogs went untouched in doubles play, posting a 3-0 mark, and also saw three players move into the Round of 16 in singles action heading into Saturday.
"It was a full day of hard-fought battles," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "I feel like we are making steady progress and getting a little tougher with every match as the fall season progresses. I was excited to start the day 3-0 in doubles and to win the first six singles matches. We seem to be playing the big points better overall."
The seventh-seeded Bulldog duo of Magda Adaloglou and Emma Antonaki earned come-from-behind success - 8-4 - over UAB's Megan Bertrands and Sophie Dodds, after trailing 2-1 early in the match, in Division I doubles. The duo will meet LSU's Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley in the Round of 16.
Janina Braun and Anastasia Rentouli steamed past Louisiana's Florian Picaut and Dana Radovanovic 8-3 to open the Bulldogs' doubles competition Friday. The tandem is set to battle Alabama's sixth-seeded Andie Daniell and Moka Ito Saturday.
Rounding out State's untarnished ledger in opening day doubles action, Sara Lizariturry and Meredith Roberts bested Troy's Maria Casas Blas and Celia Montero Estevan in a tough 8-5 fight. Lizariturry and Roberts also advance to Saturday's Round of 16, where the two will match up with fourth-seeded and 49th-ranked Sabina Machalova and Tea Jandric of host Ole Miss.
Following doubles Friday, MSU posted a 9-5 overall mark in the first two rounds of Division I singles competition, with three Bulldogs winning twice to move into the Round of 16 Saturday.
State's 12th-seeded Adaloglou powered through first-round singles play, toppling Tulane's Ivone Alvaro Ivone 6-4, 7-6(5). Adaloglou won by default in her second round over Northwestern State's Maria Skyba. She will battle Alabama's fifth-seeded and 70th-ranked Andie Daniell in Saturday's Round of 16.
MSU's ninth-seeded true freshman Antonaki notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Louisiana's Picaut in her opener. That momentum continued as she ousted Tulane's Elena Muller 6-1, 7-6(2) in her second performance of the afternoon. In Saturday's Round of 16, she will go racquet-to-racquet with Ole Miss' Alexa Bortles.
The third Bulldog to move into the Round of 16 was Rentouli. The 125th-ranked and 14th-seeded senior eased past UAB's Bertrands 6-1, 6-2 in her first affair. Rentouli then showed her veteran resiliency in a three-set decision over Alabama's Ito – 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 – in the second round. State's captain is set to battle Northwestern State's Polina Mutel in Saturday's Round of 16.
Lizariturry won her seventh match in a row to open Friday, as she bested ULM's Shivani Manjanna 6-4, 6-1. She then faced a tall task in the second round, ultimately dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to LSU's top-seeded and 38th-ranked Eden Richardson for her first setback of the 2018-19 season.
MSU's Braun found a steady rhythm as she breezed through her opening singles contest. The senior posted a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over UAB's Marlene Herrmann to move into the second round. Braun then fell to the Rebels' fourth-seeded and 53rd-ranked Sabina Machalova 6-4, 6-3.
The sophomore Roberts exhausted Southern Miss' Tjasa Jerse in a straight set first-round contest – 6-4, 6-3. The Magnolia State native then put up a strong challenge against Ole Miss' sixth-seeded and 92nd-ranked Jandric, taking the first set before falling 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 in a second round affair.
State true freshman Tamara Racine dropped a hard-fought contest to McNeese State's Charoline Erlandsson - 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 - in her opening appearance. Racine then defaulted to ULM's Maria Emilia Alfaro in Division I consolation.
Competition will continue on Saturday, starting with doubles at 8 a.m. CT and singles to directly follow.
