Sara Lizariturry teamed with Janina Braun to advance to Sunday's doubles final while also remaining undefeated in singles this fall.
Braun/Lizariturry Advance To Doubles Title Match At SMU Invite
October 06, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS, Texas – Mississippi State women's tennis' second day of action at the SMU Invite produced another solid showing, with one doubles team and two singles players reaching the finals of their respective draws.
State's first-time tandem of Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry have proved to be quite a force for the Maroon & White in their short time together. In Saturday's semifinal round, the pair posted a 6-4 victory over host SMU's Tiffany Hollebeck and Sarai Monarrez Yesakion on their home court to advance to Sunday's #1 Doubles draw final. Braun and Lizariturry will meet Houston's duo of Phonexay Chitdara and Sophie Gerits in Sunday's title match at 9 a.m. CT.
The newcomer MSU duo of Tamara Racine and Meredith Roberts dropped their contest in Saturday's consolation semifinals to Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez and Stanescu 6-3. Racine and Roberts will appear in the #1 Doubles third-place match on Sunday and meet SMU's Ana Perez-Lopez and Karina Traxler.
State posted a 2-2 mark in day two's singles semifinal rounds in the top two draws.
Lizariturry extended her winning streak to open the fall slate to five straight matches, making her the only undefeated Bulldog this semester. On Saturday, she cruised past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Camille Townsend 6-3, 6-2 in the #2 Singles draw semifinals. The rookie Racine also added a victory for the Bulldogs in that draw, toppling Fabienne Schmidt – 6-4, 6-3 - of Austin Peay State.
Since the two MSU players would have met each other in the final, it was decided that Racine will battle Austin Peay State's Tatiana Nikolaeva in Sunday's finals while LIzariturry will meet SMU's Sarai Monarrez Yesaki in the draw's third-place match.
In the #1 Singles draw Saturday, MSU's senior Braun fell 6-2, 6-1 to Texas A&M's Tatiana Marakova in semifinal action. She will appear in Sunday's third-place match, where she will face Middle Tennessee State's Zani Barnard.
The sophomore Roberts also fell in #1 Singles semifinal action, dropping a tight 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 battle to Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez. She will appear in the draw's seventh-place match Sunday versus SMU's Karina Traxler.
Sunday's final rounds of competition will begin with doubles starting at 9 a.m. CT in the Lone Star state.
