TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mississippi State's women's tennis quartet wrapped up the first day of play at the Roberta Alison Invitational on Friday with 1-1 doubles and 3-3 singles marks.
A damp and cloudy morning transitioned doubles play inside host Alabama's Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility to open the morning.
Kicking off doubles competition in Tuscaloosa, State's Janina Braun and Tamara Racine upset the second-seeded Ashleigh Harvey and Meredith Jones of Air Force in a tight 7-5 affair in the Nancy Harris Draw. The pair advanced to Saturday's semifinals where they will match up with Tulane's Ivone Alvaro and Laura Fabrizi.
Bulldogs Sara Lizariturry and Meredith Roberts dropped their opening contest to Clemson's top-seeded and 16th-ranked Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro 6-3. Lizariturry and Roberts will continue play in Saturday's consolation semifinals in the Antonia Foehse Draw, as they will prepare for Ole Miss' fourth-seeded Allie Sanford and Anna Vrbenska.
The first and second rounds of singles action began shortly after Friday's first round of doubles.
MSU's third-seeded Racine picked up the Bulldogs' lone first-round victory with a straight-set triumph - 6-3, 6-4 - over Indiana's Olga Zavarotnaya in the Bianca Svensson Draw. The true freshman advanced to the afternoon semifinals, where she was downed by host Alabama's Luca Fabian 7-5, 6-2. Racine will now compete in Saturday's third-place match against Kentucky's fourth-seeded Ana Tkachenko.
The senior Braun was bested in a very tight three-set affair - 7-6(7), 3-6, 1-0(7) - by Clemson's Sydney Riley in the Susan Carver Draw opener. Braun and Riley took the contest to a 10-point tiebreak decision due to rain. Braun then found redemption in the consolation semifinals over East Carolina's Lisa Hofbauer with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(4) victory. State's veteran senior will battle Clemson's top-seeded Tate Schroeder in Saturday's consolation final.
The Bulldogs' Lizariturry was edged in straight sets by South Alabama's third-seeded and 113th-ranked Yu Fujioka 7-6(5), 6-4 in the Amy Mascotti Draw's inaugural round. In Friday's consolation semis, the junior rebounded for a straight-set victory – 6-3, 6-4 – over Tulane's Ivone Alvaro. Lizariturry will prepare for Ole Miss' fourth-seeded Tereza Janatova in Saturday's consolation final.
State's sophomore Roberts was forced to retire against Memphis' Aleksandra Topalovic in the first round of the Paulina Bigos Draw due to illness, trailing 4-3 in the first set. She then withdrew from Friday's consolation opener. In Saturday's seventh-place match, Roberts is slated to face DePaul's Marija Jovicic.
The Bulldogs will be back in action with back-to-back rounds to conclude doubles play and the final round of singles draws on Saturday.
