AUBURN, Ala. – Battling through rain and mud, the Mississippi State cross country team finished 12th in the 2018 Southeastern Conference Championships held on Friday at Indian Pines Golf Course.
Fifth-ranked Arkansas took the women's title by fielding six runners in the top 10. Florida's Jessica Pascoe took home the individual crown.
"We did some things better today and corrected a few things we needed to from the previous two meets, but the overall finish is not what we expect from ourselves," head coach Houston Franks said. "I thought we showed more toughness in the middle today, but we got too far down in the beginning. We had to work too hard to get back in it, and then did not have enough left in the tank to close like we need to. We still need to clean some things up before the regional championships."
Junior Stephanie Peterson paced the Bulldogs in the 6K, finishing 29th with a personal-best mark of 20:22.69. It marked the third-straight race in which Peterson was MSU's top finisher.
In addition to Peterson, five other MSU runners set personal-best times Friday, including Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Sydney Steely, Carly Terp, Emma Tucker and Alex Wallace.
Behind the Chattanooga, Tennessee, native Peterson, senior Shannon Fair finished 33rd, while Mia Meydrich finished 58th. Tucker (83rd) and Steely (93rd) rounded out the top-five finishers for State.
Next Up For MSU …
MSU will next fight for a spot in the 2018 NCAA Championships, when the Bulldogs will run in the 2018 NCAA South Region Championships on Nov. 9 in Tallahassee, Florida.
