OXFORD, Miss. – Two Mississippi State women's tennis players are into the singles quarterfinals of the 2018 ITA Southern Regional Championships after tough three-set comeback victories on Saturday.
For the second-straight match, State's 125th-ranked and 14th-seeded senior Anastasia Rentouli came back from a set down, as she ousted Northwestern State's Polina Mutel in Saturday's Round of 16. The veteran captain dropped the first set before persevering 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinal.
There, Rentouli is set to meet 92nd-ranked and sixth-seeded Tea Jandric of host Ole Miss at 10 a.m. CT.
True freshman Emma Antonaki became the Bulldogs' second quarterfinalist in a dramatic afternoon performance to end the day. The ninth-seeded Antonaki grinded back from dropping the first set to take a 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) marathon decision over LSU's Alexa Bortles, saving four match points along the way. The true freshman muscled back from 5-4 and 6-5 deficits in the third-set tiebreak to claim the victory.
The rookie Antonaki will take on another Tiger Sunday in the quarters in 38th-ranked and top-seeded Eden Richardson, also in a 10 a.m. first serve.
"I am proud of Ana and Emma for fighting back from big deficits for singles wins," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "Ana showed great maturity, and Emma's match was quite the nail-biter. I am especially proud of how hard Emma fought in saving four match points in her marathon battle."
If Rentouli and Antonaki triumph in their quarterfinal matches, they would play in the semifinals Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
In State's other Round of 16 matchup Saturday, 12th-seeded sophomore Magda Adaloglou was bested in straight sets - 6-0, 6-1 - by Alabama's 70th-ranked and fifth-seeded Andie Daniell.
After State went 3-0 in the first round of doubles on Friday, Saturday proved to be a different story as all three Bulldog tandems fell.
The seventh-seeded duo of Adaloglou and Antonaki dropped an 8-2 decision to LSU's Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley. State seniors Janina Braun and Rentouli were stalled by Alabama's sixth-seeded Daniell and Moka Ito 8-4. And wrapping up the Bulldogs' doubles stretch in Oxford, Sara Lizariturry and Meredith Roberts dropped a heartbreaking back-and-forth 13-11 battle fourth-seeded and 49th-ranked Tea Jandric and Sabina Machalova of host Ole Miss.
"We had a tough start to the day, losing all three doubles and the first set in all three singles matches," said Greenan. "I still thought the girls showed some progress in organizing their games. We lost a bunch of big points, but I was seeing more courageous choices in big moments."
