Shaw Earns SEC Co-Freshman of the Week

The rookie posted a career-high 18 kills in an SEC victory over Auburn

STARKVILLE – With her first SEC win as a Mississippi State student-athlete in the books, freshman Paige Shaw was tabbed the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Oct. 1).

In the five-set victory over Auburn to open up the home portion of the SEC schedule, Shaw tallied 18 kills on a .228 hitting percentage. She also notched her first-career service ace and registered career highs in attack attempts (55), solo blocks (2), total blocks (4.0) and points (22.0).

On the season, Shaw averages 2.35 kills per set.

"I'm honored to receive SEC Co-Freshman of the Week," said Shaw. "I have to give credit to my great teammates and coaches who have helped me get to where I am at now as a student and athlete."

Shaw is the second Bulldog this season to earn a weekly award from the conference. Fellow freshman Deja Robinson was named SEC Freshman Player of the Week on Sept. 4.

"I am proud of Paige for this recognition," said head coach Julie Darty. "I think we all know that Paige is capable of taking on a large role for our team and it was nice to see her carry [that role] with confidence and poise in our SEC home opener against Auburn.

"We know we still have much to improve upon as a group, but Paige has been taking big strides in her individual game and it is certainly helping our team have some early success. I am very happy for Paige, but I am most excited to see what she continues to do for us this season and in her future here. Paige is a special player and person, and I'm so happy she is a part of this program."
